Roll Compactor is totally based on the method of Dry Granulation. Most pharmaceutical companies employ roller compaction for their production operations. Some examples of pharmaceutical materials for which this method is often used include inactive compounds (e.g., fillers, preservatives, excipients and coloring agents), active ingredients, herbal extracts, and controlled release and immediate release drugs.
Roll Compactor is totally based on the method of Dry Granulation. The powder charged in the feed hopper is pre-densified and fed between two counter-rotating rolls. As the volume decreases through the region of maximum pressure, the material is formed into a solid compacted sheet. The densified sheets can then be granulated to any desired mesh size with the use of CM Granulator or CM Communicating Mill. CM Mini Roll Compactor is designed to the same principle and mode of operation as that of production size CM Roll Compactor.

Overview of the Roller Compaction Process
Roller compaction is a sophisticated dry granulation technique commonly used in pharmaceutical manufacturing to produce high-quality granules. This method is preferred over slugging due to its ability to generate more uniform and consistent granules. Here’s a breakdown of the roller compaction process:
Components of Roller Compaction
- Feeding System:
- Function: The feeding system transports raw material from the machine’s hopper to the compaction unit. It ensures a steady and controlled flow of material into the compaction zone.
- Design: Typically includes a screw feeder or vibratory feeder, which can be adjusted to handle various material types and flow characteristics.
- Compaction Unit:
- Function: This unit compresses the raw material between two counter-rotating rolls, creating a dense ribbon or sheet of material.
- Mechanism: The rolls apply high pressure to the material, forcing it into a compacted form. The gap between the rolls and the pressure applied can be adjusted to control the density and thickness of the compacted material.
- Size Reduction Unit:
- Function: After compaction, the material is processed in the size reduction unit to achieve the desired particle size and granule uniformity.
- Design: This unit typically includes a granulator or mill, which breaks down the compacted ribbons into granules of specified size. The granules are then screened to ensure uniformity.
Benefits of Roller Compaction
- Uniform Granule Size: Roller compaction produces granules with consistent size and density, leading to better quality and performance of the final pharmaceutical products.
- Higher Product Quality: The method results in a more homogeneous blend, reducing variability in the final product.
- Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of materials, including inactive compounds (fillers, preservatives, excipients), active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), herbal extracts, and both controlled-release and immediate-release drugs.
- Efficiency: The process is more efficient and scalable compared to slugging, leading to increased production efficiency and reduced waste.
Applications
Roller compaction is particularly effective for materials that are difficult to granulate using wet methods. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for producing granules for tablets and capsules, as well as in other industries such as food and chemicals.
